Dear Ms. Shellenbarger,
I am a Certified Anger Management provider and agree 100% with the findings of Dr. LaFair. Anger is a normal emotion designed to keep us alive. The angry response is learned in childhood from exposure to angry, aggressive behavior of parents, siblings or schoolmates and is then carried forth into adulthood.
We are very much like juke boxes. Anger occurs when we sense that we're being attacked (usually verbally). We tend to respond in an angry or aggressive fashion because it's the only record (response) available to us. In a modern and effective Anger Management program, I teach my clients the tools necessary to change their behavior. This amounts to adding new records to their juke box which now provides them with additional choices or options to respond differently to the perceived attack.
Aggressively responding to our perceived attacks not only occurs in the office workplace, but also between spouses, family members, friends, co-workers, bosses, physicians and their colleagues, attorneys and their clients, and even between individuals who sense being attacked by their state or federal government. You can read in every newspaper and story about the anger in our lives every day. How about road rage when someone cuts us off while driving or domestic violence?
Our course consists of several components: Gaining Control of Ourselves, increasing our Stress Management, enhancing our Emotional Intelligence and improving our Communications ability. We also use very specific pre-training and post-training testing of our clients to evaluate the effectiveness of our program and clients' changes.
I am recognized by human resource departments of corporations, governmental agencies and courts all over the country.
Anger can be controlled effectively. Our program does this every day in my office or on site as required.
